The Curator's Crates: Volume 1

Crate-Digging Catches
This month’s vinyl find is Pleezebaleevit by Doggy’s Angels. Released in 2000, this album is a classic representation of West Coast hip-hop. Snoop Dogg’s angels, Big Chan (Chan Gaines), Coniyac (Kim Proby-Davis) and Kola Loc (Kola Marion), deliver smooth R&B choruses and punchy raps over floating whistle lead synths and funky drums. While the album has many features, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and Latoiya Williams were particularly notable. The album comes with a little bit of legal lore as the Charlie’s Angel inspired cover did not get past Columbia Pictures, who later sued for copyright infringement. If you’re only going to listen to one song, “Baby If You’re Ready” is a personal favorite. Unavailable on most streaming services, Pleezbaleevit is a nostalgic and hard-to-find gem that is worth seeking out.

Fresh finds worth a download
Pizza Time - che
Produced by Dj Smokey (of Shadow Wizard Money Gang fame), this autotuned trap song filled with fun ad libs is a braggadocious earworm.
LIKE ME - UNIIQU3
Jersey club princess UNIIQU3 shows off on this confident trap-touched jersey beat.
Lucifer - A.G. Cook.
If you’re enjoying Brat Summer you might enjoy this hyperpop ballad from the Charli XCX extended universe. The song’s textural sound design features bouncy synths, crunchy drums, and filtered vocals.
Chopped and Screwed
Samples, Remixes, and Interpolations
Everybody - Dj Tameil
A staple of Baltimore Club music, “Everybody” is the high point of Dj Tameil’s 2011 Tek 9 EP. This song features a sample from “Everybody Everybody” by Black Box. The Italo dance song is a popular sample that takes on a new energy with the inclusion of heavy breakbeats. Side note, I am keeping an eye out for a mainstream Baltimore Club moment after seeing the positive response to Jersey Club.
Situationship - Hermeth
I think the description of an acid breaks remix of Iggy Azalea's “Work” might be sufficient. At 6 minutes and 21 seconds long, it gives off the vibe of a smoke-filled club basement and dancing laser visuals, perfect for your afters set.
Untouched - Mirasia, Kuya Neil
“Untouched” speeds up the iconic strings from The Veronica’s song of the same name for a classic-with-a-twist jersey club banger. While this song includes brief glimpses of The Veronica’s vocals, the chopped chorus comes from “My Neck My Back (Lick it)” by Khia. Sitting at 3,270 listens on Spotify, this underrated song deserves some more attention.
Playlist Tour
Welcome to My Crib
In this series, I create a 30 minute to 1 hour set based on a genre-bending playlist. The goal is to experiment, traveling between genres and energy levels, in a way that is authentic to the the average person’s diverse listening taste. This month’s playlist, Texture, focuses on varied drum patterns and confident vocals. The energy ranges from melodic dreamy house music to whiny hyperpop and bursting big beat.
The Playlist Tour set features mostly high energy breakbeat with a mid-way shift to jungle. Here you’ll find a range of sounds like the original “Smack My Bitch Up” by The Prodigy, a jungle remix of Cardi B’s “Up”, and a UKG remix of “Rockstar” by Lisa.
